Tragedy Strikes Sapelo Island: Dock Collapse Claims Lives

Imagine this: a festive day turns into a nightmare. On Georgia's Sapelo Island, a dock suddenly gave way, plunging people into the water. Seven lives were lost, and six more were critically injured in the horrific incident. The collapse happened during a fall celebration, where the island's small Gullah-Geechee community, descendants of Black slaves, had gathered. Emergency crews from the US Coast Guard, local fire departments, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources rushed to the scene. They searched the water using boats and helicopters equipped with side-scanning sonar. Authorities were baffled as there was no sign of a collision. The dock just failed, sending people into the water. Among the deceased was a chaplain from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. There were around 20 people on the dock when it collapsed. This gangway connected the ferry dock to the shore. The cause of the collapse remains unknown.

Georgia's governor, Brian Kemp, expressed deep sadness over the tragedy. President Joe Biden also offered federal assistance. Sapelo Island is a historic spot, known for its unique culture and history. It's about 97 kilometers south of Savannah and can only be reached by boat. The community of Hogg Hummock, with its dirt roads and modest homes, was founded by former enslaved people. They've stayed close, bonded by family and history. Unfortunately, their population has been shrinking, and some families have sold their land to outsiders. Recent zoning changes by McIntosh County have led to protests and lawsuits. Residents fear that larger homes could lead to higher taxes, forcing them to sell their ancestral land.
