Tragedy Strikes TSU Homecoming: One Dead, Nine Wounded

This past weekend, Tennessee State University's homecoming celebration turned into a devastating scene. Near the campus, a shooting left one person dead and nine others injured. The incident happened on Jefferson Street, close to 27th Avenue, around 5 p.m. on Saturday. Sadly, a suspect involved was also taken to the hospital. Among the victims, three were juveniles, the youngest being just 12 years old. Fortunately, none of the minors are in critical condition. Five victims were transported to hospitals by emergency services, while the other five were taken by private vehicles. The shooting took place just 20 minutes after Jefferson Street had reopened to traffic following the homecoming festivities. Witnesses report hearing gunshots that sounded like fireworks. Thankfully, the Nashville Fire Department was already in the area for outreach and could quickly respond. They even used belts to make emergency tourniquets for the wounded.

Don Aaron, a spokesperson for the Metro Nashville Police Department, said the shooting seemed to be between two groups targeting each other. Unfortunately, bystanders were caught in the crossfire. Authorities believe handguns were used, but they haven't determined the exact number of shots fired. This wasn't the first time police were present on Jefferson Street due to homecoming activities. They are now reviewing surveillance videos to understand what transpired. Jashawna Rucker, a bystander who had just graduated from high school, described the scene as chaotic. She was grateful that no one she knew was hurt, but the incident was a stark reminder of the violence that can erupt suddenly. As of now, officials haven't confirmed if the victims were students or their exact ages. The investigation is still ongoing.
