Tragic Boat Capsize on Lake Kivu: What Went Wrong?
Friday, October 4, 2024
This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Just last month, a boat sank near Kinshasa, taking 80 lives. And in January, another tragedy struck on Lake Maî-Ndombe, claiming 22 more lives. Even earlier this year, six people died and 64 went missing on Lake Kivu itself.
The community at Kituku port is still shocked by what happened. They're calling for the authorities to be held accountable. The road between Goma and Minova has been closed, forcing traders to use boats like the one that sank.
The governor of South Kivu province admitted things are bad but promised action. He said new rules will be made and measures put in place to prevent more accidents. But it's not just up to him. Everyone needs to work together to make sure disasters like this don't happen again.
