Last weekend, a shocking incident unfolded in New Mexico. A 16-year-old boy, Diego Leyva, was accused of killing four family members in their Belén home. Early Saturday morning, Valencia County authorities received a 911 call from the teen himself, confessing to the crime. Police found Diego outside the house with his hands up. He was reportedly intoxicated and was immediately taken into custody.
Inside the residence, police discovered the bodies of four family members: Leonardo Leyva, Adriana Bencomo, and teens Adrian and Alexander Leyva, all believed to have died from gunshot wounds. A handgun was found on the kitchen table. Diego now faces four counts of first-degree murder and has been moved to a juvenile detention center in Albuquerque after being medically cleared.
State Police investigators are currently examining the scene and conducting interviews to understand what led to this tragedy. Once their investigation is complete, the case will be sent to the district attorney's office for prosecution.
Adriana Bencomo, one of the victims, had been an active volunteer firefighter for many years. The Valencia County Fire Department expressed their shock and sadness over her loss.
