Training Nurses: A Fresh Approach to Dementia Care

Eighteen family nurse practitioner students dove into a unique project. The goal? To boost their skills in working with older adults, particularly those with dementia. The curriculum was packed with various components to help these future nurses become more empathetic and knowledgeable. Before and after the training, tests showed a significant increase in their dementia knowledge. The results were impressive, both statistically and practically. They found that some areas, like pharmacology and treatment strategies, needed more attention.

Additionally, their attitudes and eagerness to work with elderly patients showed mild improvements, as measured by a special scale. This project not only enhanced their skills but also highlighted areas where more training was needed. Nurses play a crucial role in caring for elderly patients with dementia. This project was about making future nurses better equipped to handle the challenges that come with this role. It opened their eyes to the importance of empathy and the gaps in their knowledge.
