Spring Holiday Train Rush in China
On the first day of the spring holiday, China’s trains carried an astonishing 24.8 million people—a new single‑day peak for the national rail network.
The national railway authority released the figure, highlighting how busy the country’s rail system becomes when the nation takes a break. The next day, officials predict another 19.7 million passengers will hit the tracks.
To meet demand, some routes added extra cars:
- Zhengzhou: 140 additional trains were scheduled.
- Chengdu: Fleet increased by 184 cars.
These numbers illustrate how tourism fuels China’s economy, especially as other sectors such as housing struggle and overall consumer spending declines. Rail travel remains a key avenue for citizens to explore the country during holidays, boosting local businesses and keeping the broader market active.
