Transforming Decay: Robin Rhode's Vast Canvas of Johannesburg's Dysfunction

Johannesburg, the city that never sleeps, has been a constant source of inspiration for artist Robin Rhode. For his latest project, he turned to an abandoned sports ground, where he discovered a decades-old miniature golf course, indoor soccer fields, and a tennis training wall. This vast canvas of decay and dysfunction became the backdrop for his latest work, Joburg Hymn. Rhode's art is deeply rooted in Johannesburg, and he believes that the city's rough, worn-out spaces are calling for a new narrative to be drawn or painted onto them. He often works in outdoor spaces, where his art will eventually fade away, leaving behind only playful photographs of him posing with his creations. But what drives Rhode to continue creating in a city that seems to be constantly collapsing? "Coming back from Berlin, and traveling around the city, and seeing the collapse of these structures, it's had a really profound effect on me," he said. "It's motivated me to come back to South Africa and to revitalize these structures."

Rhode's work has been met with critical acclaim, with heavyweight institutions like the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquiring his pieces. He has also collaborated with U2 and won the 2018 Zurich Art Prize. Despite his international success, Johannesburg remains his muse, and he continues to find inspiration in its decayed spaces. But what about the city's political chaos? The constant changes in leadership, the collapse of infrastructure, and the decay of public spaces - is this not a reflection of the city's deeper problems? Rhode believes that his art can be a mechanism for change, a way to critique the political structures that are collapsing. "I want to use my art as a means to come back and inject a kind of energy and life, a new narrative into these decayed worn-out spaces," he said.
