Travis Hunter, a star player for the Colorado Buffaloes, has announced his plans to enter the 2025 NFL Draft. Hunter, who is just 21 years old, is a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. He plays both cornerback and receiver for the Buffaloes, making him a rare two-way player in college football. Hunter's incredible skills and versatility have earned him a projected first overall pick in next April's draft. However, playing both offense and defense at the professional level is uncharted territory. "Nobody has done it yet, " Hunter acknowledged. This season, Hunter has set career highs with 74 receptions, 911 yards, and nine touchdowns while also contributing three interceptions, eight passes defended, and 23 tackles on the defensive side.
Hunter was a highly sought-after prospect coming out of high school, earning a consensus five-star rating. Initially committed to Florida State, he shocked the recruiting world by switching to Jackson State, becoming the first five-star recruit to commit to a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). He played one season under legendary coach Deion Sanders at Jackson State before transferring to Colorado when Sanders took over the program before the 2023 season. Last year, Hunter averaged an impressive 115 plays per game, participating in offense, defense, and special teams.
Deion Sanders's son, Shedeur Sanders, who plays quarterback for Colorado, is also projected to be an early draft pick. Shedeur mentioned that while he believes Hunter is more deserving of the Heisman Trophy, he isn't letting personal desires get in the way of his teammate's potential success. "If it’s between me and him, I would want him to get it, " Shedeur said, exhibiting a level of sportsmanship that one doesn't often see in competitive environments.
