Trump Says He No Longer Sees Anthropic as a Threat

Toronto, CanadaSaturday, June 20, 2026

President Trump told the Axios Show that he once worried about AI firm Anthropic, but he no longer does.

He explained that a week earlier he might have viewed the company as a national security risk, yet this view has changed.

The discussion came after Anthropic’s top engineers were set to meet officials from his administration about how foreign users could access its latest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

In response to a directive from the administration, Anthropic quickly shut off those models for everyone, including foreign nationals.

Trump said that the company’s CEO, Dario Amodei, handled the export‑control request responsibly and promptly.

During a recent G7 summit in France, Trump sat down with tech leaders like Amodei to talk about AI safety and policy.

He also mentioned that he could invoke the Defense Production Act against Anthropic if necessary, but he is not sure it would be needed.

When asked for a statement, an Anthropic spokesperson thanked the administration and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting U.S. infrastructure while keeping America at the forefront of AI innovation.
