Before the election, some labor unions attempted to build a positive relationship with Donald J. Trump. It seems their efforts might be paying off. Recently, President-elect Trump expressed his support for the International Longshoremen’s Association, which represents dockworkers along the East and Gulf Coasts. The union and their employers are at an impasse regarding the use of automated port machinery that can move cargo without human help. The I. L. A. is against it, fearing job losses, while shipping companies argue that the machinery is cheaper and more efficient.
Mr. Trump met with I. L. A. leaders and showed empathy for their concerns. "I've looked into automation and understand its impacts, " he said. "The money saved isn’t worth the harm it causes American workers, especially our longshoremen. "
