Trump's Plane Tour: A Look at Air Force One Delays

In February 2025, former U. S. President Donald Trump visited a Boeing plane in West Palm Beach, Florida. This wasn't just any plane; it was a 12-year-old Boeing 747-8. The plane was previously owned by Qatar's royal family and is now managed by a company based on the Isle of Man. The visit was a way for Trump to point out the delays in getting new Air Force One aircraft. The story begins in 2017 when Trump first negotiated with Boeing for a pair of new 747-8 aircraft. The plan was to have these new planes ready by December 2024. However, things didn't go as planned. Boeing pushed the delivery date back to at least 2027 or 2028. This means the new Air Force One planes won't be ready until the end of Trump's potential second term. The White House Communications Director, Steven Cheung, explained that Trump's tour was a way to show the public the new hardware and technology. It also highlighted the project's failure to deliver the new Air Force One on time. Boeing, however, didn't comment on Trump's visit and referred questions about the delays to the Air Force.

The delays in production have been caused by several factors. Supply chain issues, high costs, and the complexity of the planes have all slowed things down. These planes are meant to be an airborne White House, so they need to be equipped with military avionics, advanced communications, and a self-defense system. In 2016, Trump criticized the high price tag for the new Air Force One aircraft. He demanded that the then-Boeing CEO agree to a contract of no more than $4 billion for the two planes. Boeing's leadership later said the contract was priced too low for the planes with all the necessary equipment. Trump also had a unique idea for the new Air Force One planes. He proposed changing the look to incorporate a dark red color. However, former President Joe Biden changed those plans back to resemble the current light blue model. Despite this, the miniature Air Force One model atop Trump's Inauguration Day cake featured the president's preferred red-line design. Boeing's CEO, Kelly Ortberg, mentioned that the company was meeting with Trump's ally Elon Musk to see if they could speed up the plane's delivery. This is interesting because Musk's SpaceX is a competitor to Boeing's space division. Ortberg said, "The president wants those planes sooner so we're working with Elon to see what can we do to pull up the schedule of those programs. "
