The Department of Education has recently acknowledged the difficulties faced by students, families, and postsecondary institutions during the latest FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) launch. 

A recent survey by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) revealed that 75% of private institutions experienced FAFSA complications that influenced the composition of their incoming freshman classes. 

The consequences were significant, with 43% reporting a smaller freshman cohort, 18% less racial or ethnic diversity, and 27% fewer financial aid recipients. 

Despite Education Secretary Miguel Cardona's promise of a simpler FAFSA application process that would take only 15-20 minutes in the future, the damage has already been done. Enrollments have been affected, with many problems resolved, but campus officials are drained, insisting on a flawless rollout no later than December 1. 

Furthermore, the delayed FAFSA launch implies that most households will not be able to initiate their forms until weeks after a decisive presidential election that will determine the fate of the Education Department. This raises concerns about the future of federal financial aid and the role of the Department of the Department of Education.
