U. S. and Philippines Hold Joint Drills as China Flexes Muscle Around Taiwan
Luzon, PhilippinesFriday, October 18, 2024
Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory and has threatened force if needed. China's recent military activities, including the collision with the Filipino boat, are seen as provocations. The Philippine patrol vessel, BRP Datu Cabaylo, was damaged in the incident, which Manila condemned as a violation of international law. This isn't the first such clash; Beijing has been increasingly aggressive in the South China Sea, ignoring an international ruling against its claims.
The joint U. S. -Filipino drills involve over 1, 000 participants each, with smaller numbers from other countries. They include live-fire exercises and training against chemical and biological warfare. Despite the tensions, both the U. S. and the Philippines have emphasized that these exercises are about preparedness, not immediate confrontation.
