U. S. Citizens Headed to El Salvador's Maximum Security Prison: A Fresh Perspective
Wednesday, February 5, 2025
The prison has room for 40, 000 people, and Bukele has offered to fill some empty spots with criminals from the U. S. This is a controversial idea. The U. S. cannot deport its own citizens to another country without violating international law.
Many are questioning the legality of this arrangement. The Due Process of Law Foundation and the Socorro Juridico Humanitario rights group have expressed concerns about the mental health of the inmates and the possibility of rehabilitation.
The prison director, Belarmino Garcia, described the inmates as "psychopaths" who will likely never leave the prison. However, nearly a third of those detained at CECOT are believed to be innocent.
This is a controversial move, and it remains to be seen if the U. S. will follow through with it. But one thing is for sure, the conditions at CECOT are far from ideal.
