U. S. Life Expectancy Bounces Back Post-Pandemic
USAThursday, December 19, 2024
The CDC found that drug overdose deaths finally went down for the first time since 2018. Young people aged 15 to 24 saw the biggest drop in overdose deaths. Although there was a slight rise in deaths involving cocaine and psychostimulants like methamphetamine, deaths from opioids fell by 17%.
While the news is good, it's important to note that the threat of Covid isn't completely gone. Experts are still trying to figure out if death rates will continue to fall or stabilize at a predictable rate.
The improvements weren't even across all groups. Minority communities, including Black, Asian, and Hispanic people, saw bigger drops in death rates compared to white people. This is largely due to changes in Covid death rates.
So, what's next? Well, we can only hope that this upward trend in life expectancy continues.
