The UK is still grappling with severe weather conditions, including snow, ice, rain, and wind, following the impact of Storm Goretti earlier this week. However, relief is expected by the start of next week.

Scotland Faces Worsening Conditions

In Scotland, weather warnings have escalated from yellow to amber for snow and ice. Residents in central and northeastern Scotland are urged to exercise extreme caution, as the warning is in effect from early Sunday morning until Monday afternoon.

Power Outages and Travel Disruptions

The inclement weather has led to significant power outages, with over 20,000 homes in England and Wales still without electricity. The National Grid has been diligently working to restore power, having already reconnected nearly 170,000 properties.

The amber warning in Scotland poses substantial risks, including difficult travel conditions for both road and rail. The Met Office anticipates potential power cuts and disruptions to mobile phone services. Fiona Hyslop, the Scottish Transport Secretary, advises postponing non-essential travel and suggests working from home to ensure safety.

Storm Goretti's Impact

Storm Goretti brought heavy snow, ice, and strong winds across the UK. On Thursday, the Met Office issued a rare red warning for wind in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, with wind speeds reaching up to 99 mph (159 km/h). Tragically, a man lost his life when a tree fell on his caravan in the Mawgan area of Helston.

Cornwall Council described the storm as one of the worst they have encountered. Emergency crews have been working around the clock to clear fallen trees and address urgent issues. Power outages have been a widespread problem, with over 20,000 properties still affected on Saturday.

Relief on the Horizon

According to the Met Office, the extreme cold is expected to subside next week. Temperatures are forecasted to range between 9°C and 11°C in the south and 6-8°C elsewhere, bringing some respite to those enduring the harsh conditions.
