Ukraine’s Air Defences Low on Missiles

Kyiv, UkraineSaturday, May 9, 2026

The Ukrainian air force has announced that it is running out of missiles to counter Russian attacks. The shortage comes after a heavy winter campaign by Russia, leaving many launchers with only half the ammunition they need. The spokesperson said that this is a serious problem for the country’s defence.

Ukraine has relied on its own technology to shoot down long‑range drones. It uses interceptor drones, mobile gun units and electronic warfare tactics. However, when it comes to intercepting missiles, the country still depends on equipment supplied by foreign allies.

Over more than four years of conflict, Ukraine has experienced delays and disruptions in receiving air‑defence systems from its partners. These supplies are also being used in other conflicts, such as the war between the United States and Israel over Iran, which puts extra pressure on deliveries.

Because of these supply issues, Ukraine now has very limited missile stockpiles. The air force has had to request only a handful of missiles—sometimes as few as five or ten—for systems like NASAMS and IRIS‑T. This shortage could weaken the country’s ability to defend its airspace against further strikes.
