Ukraine's NATO Dream: A Possible Reality?
Washington D.C., USATuesday, October 22, 2024
Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, really wants NATO membership. He said if Ukraine isn't part of NATO, it's like being left out in the cold. He's been talking to NATO leaders, saying Ukraine deserves to be the 33rd member.
Zelensky visited Belgium and said Ukraine had a tough choice: nuclear weapons or NATO. He made it clear they won't make nuclear weapons, but he wants NATO membership for security.
Years ago, Ukraine had nuclear weapons after the Soviet Union fell apart. In 1994, Ukraine gave them up and got security promises from the U. S. , Russia, and the U. K. But now, Ukraine's former military chief, Valery Zaluzhnyi, says NATO is the best way to secure Ukraine.
Zelensky told a newspaper he isn't sure what will happen after the U. S. election. He hopes for good news.
