Ukraine's Nuclear Warning to NATO

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently hinted at a dramatic shift in policy. In a conversation with former U. S. President Donald Trump, he warned that Ukraine might seek nuclear weapons if not accepted into NATO. This ultimatum was delivered from Brussels, where Zelensky met with EU leaders to present his war strategy. Though NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte didn't endorse the plan immediately, NATO has reaffirmed Ukraine's potential membership. The Kremlin blames NATO's expansion for its invasion, and while NATO supports Ukraine, full membership is still pending. Countries like Poland and the Baltic states back Ukraine's admission, but there’s concern that it could escalate tensions with Russia.

Ukraine has been building ties with individual NATO members and recently signed a security pact with Greece. Zelensky's warning marks a significant shift from Ukraine's past nuclear policies. After the Soviet Union's collapse, Ukraine agreed to disarm under the Budapest Memorandum, but Russia's aggression has many Ukrainians questioning this decision. Zelensky had already warned at the Munich Security Conference in 2022 that if security assurances weren't met, Ukraine might reconsider its nuclear stance.
