Ukraine's Zelenskyy Gets a Boost from US Envoy Amid Tensions
Kyiv, UkraineFriday, February 21, 2025
European governments, who had been feeling left out of the talks between the U. S. and Russia, stepped in to support Zelenskyy. Polish President Andrzej Duda, a vocal supporter of Ukraine, spoke with Zelenskyy and encouraged him to maintain a calm and constructive relationship with Trump. Duda emphasized the importance of U. S. support in achieving peace in Ukraine.
The European Union also planned to send a strong message of support to Ukraine. The EU's top defense official announced that a new aid package would be sent to Ukraine to mark the third anniversary of the war. Senior EU officials, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, were set to travel to Kyiv to show their support.
Despite the efforts to support Ukraine, Russia continued its invasion. On the same day as the envoy's meeting with Zelenskyy, Russian forces struck civilian targets in Ukraine, causing casualties and damage to homes. This ongoing conflict highlights the urgent need for a resolution to the war.
The public disagreement between Trump and Zelenskyy began after the U. S. and Russia agreed to work towards ending the war and improving their diplomatic and economic ties. This agreement marked a significant shift in U. S. policy, which had previously focused on isolating Russia. Trump's national security adviser described the president as "very frustrated" with Zelenskyy, citing his unhappiness with the way the talks were handled.
Zelenskyy, in response to Trump's claims, accused the U. S. president of being misled by Russian disinformation. He suggested that Trump had been duped by Russian propaganda, which had portrayed Zelenskyy as unpopular and Ukraine as the aggressor in the war.
