Ukrainian Soldiers Turn Trainers to Help Germany Ready for 2029

Berlin, GermanyWednesday, March 11, 2026
Germany’s army chief announced that Ukrainian military instructors will join German training schools to prepare the country for a potential Russian strike by 2029. This marks a reversal of roles, as Western forces had previously been helping Ukraine defend itself. In early March, Berlin and Kyiv signed an agreement allowing Ukrainian staff to teach German troops lessons learned from the ongoing war. The German commander expressed confidence, noting that Ukraine remains the only nation with active frontline experience against Russia. The plan is part of a broader trend: Ukraine has also offered help to the United States in countering Iranian drones. Germany was the first Western nation to formalize this training partnership, but other countries are expected to follow. German officials estimate that Russia could launch a large‑scale attack on NATO by 2029, prompting urgent preparation. The army chief warned that Russia will not wait for formal declarations of readiness and urged the use of all available training opportunities.
Russia denies any intention to attack NATO, yet past assurances have been disregarded when Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022. The initial group of Ukrainian trainers will number around thirty to forty and will stay for several weeks at a time. They bring skills in artillery, engineering, armored tactics, drone operations and command systems. Since 2022, Germany has supplied Ukrainian forces with Marder infantry fighting vehicles, Leopard tanks, howitzers and air‑defence equipment. Ukrainian troops have used these tools in combat to develop data‑centric warfare techniques that are not covered in traditional manuals. The commander emphasized that the instructors’ presence signals a partnership based on equal footing, with Ukraine sharing battlefield experience in return for training support.
