Understanding Prostate Cancer: What Men in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, Know and Think

Prostate cancer, commonly known as PCa, is a major health concern worldwide. It’s the second most common cancer in men and causes a significant number of deaths each year. However, there’s a gap in research when it comes to understanding how men in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the Jazan region, think about and deal with prostate cancer. To fill this gap, a study was conducted from December 2022 to March 2023 among men over 40 years old. The study looked at many areas, including how much men knew about prostate cancer, their attitudes toward getting screened, and their actual screening practices. A web-based survey was used to collect information from 468 participants. The results showed that about 44% of the men didn’t know much about prostate cancer. Surprisingly, most men (60. 3%) had a positive attitude toward getting screened for it. About one-third (35. 7%) had consulted a urologist for screening, and a quarter (25. 6%) had taken a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test.

Interestingly, the main reason for getting the PSA test was because a doctor recommended it. The study also found that being married and having a family history of prostate cancer were strong factors influencing a man's awareness about the disease. Additionally, having a personal history of prostate cancer or having a postgraduate degree made men more likely to take action regarding screening. Overall, the study highlighted a significant lack of knowledge among the men in Jazan about prostate cancer and its screening practices. This underscores the importance of providing men with detailed information about the pros and cons of screening so they can make better decisions about their health.
