Squamosal synostosis is a condition that affects the skull's growth. It happens when the squamosal suture, a seam in the skull, fuses too early. This can lead to different issues depending on whether one or both sides of the skull are affected. The condition is not common, so there is a lot to learn about it.  A recent study looked at 18 patients with this condition. They wanted to see how it shows up and how it is handled.

The study found that when only one side of the skull is affected, it usually shows up early, around 1. 4 years. These cases did not have signs of high pressure inside the skull. None of these patients needed surgery. This is interesting because it shows that unilateral cases might be less severe.  The study also looked at cases where both sides of the skull were affected. In these cases, the condition showed up later, around 31 months. These patients were more likely to have high pressure inside the skull, especially if the fusion was complete. This is a big deal because high pressure can cause serious problems.

The study also looked at other cases from around the world. They found 13 more cases of squamosal synostosis. Four of these were unilateral, and nine were bilateral. The unilateral cases showed up earlier, around 5. 2 months, and did not have high pressure. The bilateral cases showed up later and had more issues with pressure. This shows that the condition can vary a lot from person to person.

So, what does all this mean? Well, it seems that squamosal synostosis can be quite different depending on whether one or both sides of the skull are affected. Unilateral cases might be less of a concern. Bilateral cases, especially those with complete fusion, need close watch. This is important because it can help doctors decide how to treat the condition. It also shows that more research is needed to fully understand squamosal synostosis.
