Unexpected Winter Chill Hits the U. S.
A sudden cold snap is sweeping across the United States, bringing snow and freezing temperatures to places that usually stay warm. The Midwest and East Coast are seeing the worst of it.
Snow Squalls Cause Dangerous Conditions
Snow squalls are causing whiteout conditions in northeastern Ohio. These sudden bursts of heavy snow and strong winds are making driving dangerous. The National Weather Service warns of low visibility and quick snow buildup on roads.
Cold Moves South
The cold won't stop there. It's also heading south. Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia, and even Florida are expecting near-freezing temperatures. In Tallahassee, Florida, there's a small chance of snow on Sunday morning. But don't expect it to stick around. The ground is too warm for any snow to accumulate.
Florida's Recent Snowfall
This isn't the first time Florida has seen snow recently. In January 2025, parts of the Florida Panhandle got up to 10 inches of snow. That was part of a record-breaking snowstorm that hit the deep South. Areas like Houston, New Orleans, and parts of Florida don't usually see snow. So, this was a big deal.
Extended Cold and Snow
The cold weather is expected to stick around into early next week. Sub-zero wind chills are forecasted from the Plains to the Midwest and Northeast. The Upper Midwest will feel the coldest wind chills on Sunday night. In central Georgia, up to 3 inches of snow is expected on Sunday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. ET.
Weather Service Advisories
The National Weather Service advises planning for slippery roads during the snow and on Sunday night into Monday morning. As remaining water and snow refreeze, roads will become even more dangerous. So, if you're in these areas, be prepared for winter weather.
