Unfair Olympic Verdict: Jordan Chiles Seeks Justice
SwitzerlandTuesday, September 17, 2024
The dispute began when the Romanian team challenged the revised final score in the floor exercise, which gave Chiles her bronze medal. CAS eventually upheld the challenge, awarding the medal to Ana Bǎrbosu of Romania. Chiles's attorneys believe that the arbitration process was flawed from the start, with CAS refusing to consider the video evidence that showed Chiles's inquiry was submitted on time. They also argue that Chiles was not properly informed of the potential conflict of interest of the President of the CAS panel.
The appeal is not just about Chiles; it's about ensuring fairness in the Olympic arbitration process. As her attorney, Maurice M. Suh, put it, "Every part of the Olympics, including the arbitration process, should stand for fair play." The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and USA Gymnastics (USAG) have both expressed support for Chiles and her quest for justice.
