Unified Teammates Head to D. C. for Legislative Push

A year ago, Scott Oftedahl and Montrell Sippel began an unexpected journey when they became team captains of the Unified Sports basketball team at Andrew High School in Tinley Park. Now, their friendship and advocacy for inclusive sports programs have taken them all the way to the nation's capital. They'll be representing Special Olympics Illinois on Lobby Day in February, pushing for support from legislators. This dynamic duo hopes to see Unified Sports, which allows students with and without disabilities to play together, expand and continue to benefit more students.

Their school is one of several in Illinois that has been recognized for its commitment to inclusive athletics. Through their participation in the Unified Generation Committee, they've learned about leadership and inclusivity, making them ideal representatives for this cause. Their teacher, Nowal Shalash, praises their natural ability to lead and inspire their peers. As they prepare to make history in D. C. , Scott and Montrell aim to share the positive impact of Unified Sports and encourage more schools to adopt these programs.
