Unions Marching to a Different Beat

The stage is set for a massive wave of protests across the USA. More than 1, 500 rallies are planned for the same day as the Army’s 250th anniversary military parade in Washington DC. This is not just any protest. It is a coordinated effort by several major unions. The American Federation of Teachers, American Postal Workers Union, and Communications Workers of America are all on board. They are joining forces with activist groups like Black Lives Matter and the ACLU. The goal? To make a statement against what they call "authoritarianism. " The protests are dubbed "No Kings Day. " This name is a clear jab at the president. The organizers see the military parade as a "made-for-TV display of dominance. " They want to counter this with a "national day of action and mass mobilization. " The irony is that the president they are protesting was democratically elected just seven months ago. But the organizers are not letting that fact get in the way of their message. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is playing a significant role in these protests. He also questions why Weingarten is not fighting as hard to improve public education. After all, more than a quarter of American kids are not proficient in math. The protests are expected to disrupt hundreds of cities in all fifty states. The organizers are confident that their message will be heard loud and clear. They have indication that their crowd could exceed 75, 000 in New York City alone. Other major rallies are planned in cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Charlotte, and Atlanta. The day's events will include speeches, marches, and other forms of protest. The goal is to make a statement that cannot be ignored. The "No Kings Day" movement is orchestrated by the 50501 Movement. This grassroots anti-Trump group formed on Reddit. They have been organizing protests since February. Their first rally was held on February 5th, followed by another on President’s Day, and a third in March. They have pledged not to hold a rally in DC on Saturday. This is after the president warned that protesters at the military parade would face "very heavy force. " Instead, they plan to make their voices heard in every other state.
