First, imagine a tiny microorganism, Lactobacterium plantarum, which is a type of bacteria. It has a big job in the world of chicken feed. This is not an ordinary bacteria. It has a unique skill, fermentation.  Fermentation is a process where bacteria changes certain substances into useful ones.

Now, picture another key player, Astragalus membranaceus. It is a plant with powerful components. These components have potential health benefits, but unfortunately, they are locked away. L Plantarum can unlock these hidden benefits using solid-State fermentation. This is a process where the bacteria can work its magic while the plant remains in its solid form.

The big question is, does fermentation change the plant for the better? To find out, researchers checked the protein, carbohydrate and two components, calycoflavone, and formononetin.  They found out that L. Plantarum was able to break down some parts of the plant. It turned the cellulose and pectin into smaller molecules and increased the amount of useful sugars like calycosin.

The bacteria was also able to improve the galactosidase in L plantarum.  The galactosidase levels could be used to monitor the fermentation process.

Next, the researchers tested how the fermented plant affected broiler chickens. They measured how well the chickens grew, how strong their immune systems were, and how well their intestines worked. The results were impressive. The fermented plant significantly improved the chickens' growth, immune function, and overall health. The chickens also had better gut health and more beneficial fatty acids.

You might be thinking, why is all of this important? Well, if you want to raise stronger chickens, you might want to think about giving them food that has been fermented by bacteria. It could give them a health boost. Just remember, how do you know if the fermentation worked?  Monitoring the galactosidase levels is a good way to start to answer this.
