"Unlocking Science's Potential: Breaking the Cycle of Short-Term Funding"
Thursday, September 12, 2024
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute's funding philosophy is a promising model, granting scientists many years' worth of funding without tying them to specific projects. This approach has led to over 30 HHMI-funded scientists winning Nobel Prizes in the past 50 years. Similarly, the Arc Institute's pilot program, providing eight labs with eight-year grants to pursue long-term research goals, is a step in the right direction.
To unlock the potential for groundbreaking discoveries and create a more sustainable scientific community, funding agencies can provide bigger grants to match the level of inflation, and institutions can pay the salaries of their employees directly rather than making investigators find money for their trainees themselves. By shifting the focus from short-term projects to long-term research goals, we can overcome the current challenges and make significant progress in various fields of science.
