A Grim Reality

Human trafficking is a grim reality that many people are unaware of. January is a month dedicated to raising awareness about this issue. It's a time to learn how to spot the signs and prevent it from happening.

Jennifer Lyons: A Survivor's Journey

Jennifer Lyons, a survivor of human trafficking, now works as a shelter coordinator for The Bridge to Hope in Menomonie. She helps others escape similar situations.

The Trap

Lyons' story began when she was a student in Milwaukee. She met a woman at a bar who offered her a modeling job. Lyons, struggling to make ends meet, took the offer. Little did she know, this was a trap. The man who contacted her turned out to be her trafficker. He used fancy cars and a charming persona to lure her in.

The Reality

Soon, Lyons realized she was not modeling but working in strip clubs across different states. Her trafficker controlled every aspect of her life. He decided when she could work, eat, or even shower. He took all her money, claiming he was managing it for her. Lyons saw the physical abuse he inflicted on other girls. She dropped out of college and did whatever he said. He even made her recruit other girls.

The Escape

Despite being cut off from the outside world, Lyons found a way to escape. She ran away and slowly rebuilt her life with the help of family and friends. For the past five years, she has been helping others escape similar situations. She believes that education is key to preventing human trafficking.

The Bridge to Hope

The Bridge to Hope offers various support methods, including a free shelter for those fleeing domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. They are open 24/7 and have a hotline for people to reach out. Lyons also advocates for businesses and schools to have speakers to educate the public about the warning signs and dangers of human trafficking.

How to Help

The Bridge to Hope accepts monetary or food and clothing donations to assist victims. They will also be hosting a charity Paint and Sip event on Tuesday, January 27th to raise money.
