US Spy Agencies Get New AI Rules to Balance Power and Safety
WASHINGTON D.C., USAFriday, October 25, 2024
The new policy framework puts a ban on certain AI uses, such as anything that could violate civil rights or automate nuclear weapon deployment. It also encourages responsible AI use by directing agencies to use advanced systems that safeguard American values.
Additionally, the rules call for better security in the computer chip supply chain and prioritize protecting the U. S. industry from foreign espionage. These guidelines follow an executive order from President Joe Biden last year, which directed federal agencies to create AI use policies.
Officials stress that these rules are necessary to ensure responsible AI use and to keep the U. S. competitive with countries like China in AI development. One major concern is the use of lethal autonomous drones. Last year, the U. S. called for international cooperation to set standards for such drones.
