Using Inflammation to Target Cancer with Neutrophils

Tumors are tricky because they don't all look the same. This makes it tough to hit them with the right medicine. But scientists have found a clever way to use inflammation to guide special cells called neutrophils, which carry drugs, right to the tumor site. They do this by causing a tiny, controlled inflammation in the tumor using something called lipopolysaccharide. This trick helps neutrophils find the tumor, even if it doesn't have specific markers.

When neutrophils reach the tumor, they release little nets that boost the anti-tumor effects. The best part? They can control the inflammation to avoid harming the rest of the body. In mice with breast cancer, this method slowed tumor growth more than usual treatments. This discovery could lead to better, more targeted cancer treatments for different tumor types.
