Vaccine Trust Takes a Hit: What Happened?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, government responses had unintended consequences. The number of unvaccinated kindergarten kids hit a record high. The CDC reported that around 80,000 more kids didn't get their shots compared to before the pandemic. This means fewer kids are protected against diseases like measles and whooping cough. In fact, the U.S. saw more measles cases in 2024 than in the past four years combined.

Why did this happen? People started to doubt vaccines after hearing things like "You won't get COVID if you're vaccinated." But that wasn't true. Even vaccinated people could spread the virus. Government officials pushed vaccine mandates, even for kids. This led many parents to think they shouldn't vaccinate their children. However, kids were never at high risk from COVID. In fact, they were more likely to die from the flu each month during the 2018-19 season than from COVID during the pandemic. Lockdowns and mandates caused other problems too. Kids missed out on school, sports, and social activities. This all made people question the trustworthiness of vaccines and the government's policies.
