Vermont's Winter Sports Stars Shine Bright
Vermont's winter sports season is in full swing, and fans are getting a say in who gets the spotlight. From hockey to wrestling and basketball, athletes are making big moves and fans are voting for their favorites. This is the first time in the 2025-26 season that the public can vote for the top athletes. The voting is open to everyone, and it's a great way to show support for local high school athletes.
How to Vote
To cast your vote, head over to burlingtonfreepress.com. Voting opened on Monday, Dec. 15, and will close at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18. The winners will be announced on Friday, so keep an eye out for the results.
Nominate an Athlete
If you know an athlete who deserves recognition, you can nominate them by sending an email to [email protected]. Just make sure to put "Athletes of the Week nomination" in the subject line.
This Week's Nominees for Boys Athlete of the Week
- Griffin Nelson (Harwood hockey): Two goals and three assists in a 6-2 win.
- Ethan Patch (Mill River wrestling): Named the most outstanding wrestler at the Sandy Murray Early Bird Tournament.
- Lynkin Poirier (Burlington hockey): Made incredible saves, including a 44-save shutout in the championship game.
- Michael Rodriguez Guerrero (St. Johnsbury basketball): Scored 35 points in a season-opening victory.
- Owen Scott (Champlain Valley basketball): Had a standout performance with five 3s and 29 points.
- Tej Stewart (Twinfield/Cabot basketball): Had a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds in the opening round of the Bob Abrahamson Tip-Off Classic.
