Vince McMahon, the co-founder of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), has agreed to pay over $1. 7 million to settle a case with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC accused McMahon of hiding payment agreements related to sexual assault charges, which affected the company's financial statements for 2018 and 2021. These payments, totaling $10. 5 million, were made to two individuals to prevent them from filing claims against him. As a result, WWE's net income was overstated by approximately 8% in 2018 and 1. 7% in 2021. McMahon neither admitted nor denied the SEC's findings but agreed to pay a $400, 000 civil penalty and reimburse WWE about $1, 331, 000. The SEC emphasized that company executives can't keep such significant agreements secret from the company's controls and auditors. McMahon's statement indicated relief that the investigation was over, labeling the issues as "minor accounting errors. " This settlement follows a series of allegations, including a former employee's sex trafficking and abuse claims in January 2023. Federal prosecutors are continuing their criminal investigation while a civil case by the former employee moves forward.
