Virginia lawmakers face scrutiny over campaign finance review changes

The Hidden Provision That Could Shield Politicians from Scrutiny

Virginia’s elections department is currently deep in the weeds of campaign finance reviews for the state’s top leaders—Governor, Attorney General, and Lieutenant Governor—all as required by law. But now, a stealthy addition in the House budget proposal threatens to pull the plug on these mandatory audits for statewide candidates and some legislators.

Why This Matters: IRS-Level Financial Checks at Risk

Former state Senator Chap Petersen didn’t mince words when comparing the audits to the IRS’s routine tax checks. "You wouldn’t skip reviewing financial records just because someone asked nicely," he argued. Watchdog groups like Clean Virginia are sounding alarms, warning that this subtle change could erode transparency when public trust in government is already fragile.

"Virginia already has weak campaign rules," said the group’s governance director. "This isn’t about party lines—it’s about protecting power."

Who’s Behind the Push? The Mystery Deepens

The controversy flared after January’s random selection process flagged several lawmakers for review, including House Speaker Don Scott and a former House member now serving in the governor’s cabinet. Neither responded when asked who pushed to end the audits.

Yet, not all politicians are eager to ditch the checks. Democratic Senator Mike Jones stated plainly, "I have nothing to hide. Transparency matters in government."

A Bipartisan Critique of the Sneaky Tactic

Republican Delegate Michael Webert agreed with the need for transparency but called out the underhanded maneuver. "If they want to end audits, fine," he said. "But do it properly—don’t bury it in a budget bill."

The timing feels particularly suspect, given that three major statewide campaigns are already under review. So far, the Lieutenant Governor’s office has called for full transparency, while the Governor’s office remains silent.

Will Virginia’s campaign finance safeguards vanish in the fine print of a budget bill?
