Virginia's Governor: Making Waves and Facing Challenges

Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia has a tough job. He can't serve two terms in a row and can't write the state's budget. Plus, what happens in Washington, D. C. , can affect Virginia. Youngkin's party, the Republicans, tried to take over the state legislature but fell short. They gained seats but still didn't get a majority. Youngkin raised a lot of money to try again but didn't succeed.

Youngkin has been trying to get more power by working with the new President, Donald Trump. He said Virginia isn't a safe place for illegal immigrants and will cut funding to places that disagree. He also invited Trump's new officials to move to Virginia. This is a new trend, as more people are moving to Virginia than leaving for the first time in a decade. Trump even held a rally in Virginia near the end of his campaign. Youngkin has done some good things, like cutting taxes. But some of his plans didn't work out. He tried to change taxes again but Democrats stopped it. He also wanted to move some sports teams to Virginia, but that didn't happen. Virginia is doing well financially now, with a lot of money from taxes. But giving money to businesses might hurt the state in the long run.
