Vivien Leigh's Rollercoaster Life: A Peek Behind the Glamour
Sri LankaSunday, January 5, 2025
Things escalated during the move to Hollywood. On the plane, she panicked and tried to jump out, believing the wing was on fire. Her behavior worsened, leading to her being replaced by Elizabeth Taylor in the film. Olivier stepped in to bring her home, but instead of taking her home, he dropped her off at an asylum.
Leigh was subjected to harsh treatments at the asylum, including ice baths and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). These treatments left her with burn marks and affected her memory. Even after these intense treatments, her mental health struggles continued. She had more manic episodes, struggled with relationships, and even went through multiple rounds of ECT.
Despite her fragile state, Leigh never stopped working. She performed on stages around the world and even in Broadway musicals. But her health finally gave out in 1967 when she died from tuberculosis at the age of 53.
