In a surprising turn of events, Los Angeles has ousted its progressive District Attorney, George Gascon. The former U. S. Assistant Attorney General, Nathan Hochman, won the election by promising to take a tougher stance on crime. Hochman's victory reflects a growing concern among voters about public safety. They seemed dissatisfied with Gascon's policies, which some believe have led to an increase in crime.
Gascon, who has held the position since 2020, faced criticism for his progressive approach to criminal justice. His loss coincides with California's passage of Proposition 36, which reintroduces harsher penalties for theft and drug offenses. The proposition gained 70% support.
Despite two unsuccessful recall attempts, Gascon defended his policies, emphasizing his office's focus on prosecuting serious crimes and the long-term benefits of rehabilitation over incarceration. However, Hochman's campaign gained significant traction, raising nearly $4 million by mid-September, while Gascon raised about $700, 000.
Many voters felt that Gascon's lenient approach to prosecuting misdemeanors and other offenses contributed to rising crime rates. Hochman, who previously ran a failed campaign for attorney general, still endorsed Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
