Voting for Values: A Granddaughter's Perspective

As the presidential election approaches, many people feel anxious, especially those worried about their treatment under a second Trump term. This is a time to think deeply about our choices. I'm the granddaughter of the late Rev. Billy Graham, and I believe it's crucial that we, as Christians, invite God into our hearts as we choose our leaders. Some evangelicals might have been misled by the MAGA movement, but admitting mistakes isn't a sign of weakness—it's a chance to realign with our values. My grandfather, known to us grandkids as "Daddy Bill, " taught us to love kindness, mercy, and humility. These aren't traits we see in former President Trump. While both men have Hollywood stars, their similarities end there. Trump's ego-driven actions and lack of love for others don't align with Christian principles. Jesus taught us to be known by our love, but Trump's divisive rhetoric and self-centered worldview contradict this.

My grandfather stood for unity, justice, and compassion. He supported civil rights and opposed apartheid. He would likely disapprove of Trump's coziness with authoritarian leaders like Vladimir Putin. Instead, I see a commitment to service and unity in Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. They represent values my grandfather held dear. Trump's pursuit of power and divisive tactics go against the humility and love the Gospel calls for. Harris, on the other hand, sees the presidency as an opportunity to serve. My endorsement isn't about party loyalty but about finding the best candidates for the common good, as my grandfather did. It's time we love each other despite our differences and choose leaders with God's love in their hearts.
