In the upcoming Massachusetts Senate race, incumbent Senator Elizabeth Warren is way ahead of her Republican challenger, John Deaton. A recent poll found that 59% of likely voters plan to vote for Warren, while only 35% support Deaton. This puts Warren on track for a solid win, similar to her 24-point lead from the 2018 election.
The poll, conducted by Suffolk University and the Boston Globe, surveyed 500 likely voters from October 2 to 6. It shows that Warren has strong support, with only 6% of voters still undecided. The two candidates will meet in two debates next week, giving voters a chance to see their differences.
Interestingly, while Vice President Kamala Harris leads over former President Donald Trump by 29 points at the top of the ticket, Warren's approval rating is even higher than Harris's. Warren is backed by 61% of voters, compared to Harris's 57%.
Some voters, like Chris Fox from North Billerica, plan to vote for Harris but not Warren. Fox sees Warren as "too radical" and prefers Deaton, who he thinks will bring fresh ideas to Washington. On the other hand, Joyce Fournier, a retired nurse from Dartmouth, appreciates Warren's inclusive policies and plans to vote for both Warren and Harris.
The poll also shows a clear gender divide. Men are split almost evenly between Warren and Deaton, but women strongly favor Warren, with 68% planning to vote for her. Independents, a crucial voting bloc in Massachusetts, also lean towards Warren, with 51% supporting her compared to Deaton's 40%.
Warren's advantages include her strong name recognition, incumbency status, and a significant cash lead of $5.3 million compared to Deaton's $828,000. Deaton, however, has the backing of a super PAC funded by cryptocurrency heavyweights.
The poll's margin of error is 4.4 percentage points. The first debate between Warren and Deaton will take place on October 15 and will be broadcast live.
