Watching Killer Whales in Captivity: What They Do All Day

Did you know that killer whales in managed care have different ways of spending their days? Scientists studied a group of killer whales to see what they were up to. They recorded videos of these amazing creatures over nine months. They looked at eight different things the killer whales did, like playing, eating, and even watching their trainers. It turns out that females spent more time paying attention to trainers and rubbing against things in their habitat than males did. The youngest male was a social butterfly, hanging out with others more than any other killer whale.

Adult whales, both male and female, showed similar levels of social behavior. Interestingly, some whales spent a lot of time watching their trainers, which scientists think shows they're happy and ready for future interactions. Overall, these killer whales seemed content, spending about 40% of their time interacting with each other and their environment. This study adds to our knowledge of how killer whales behave in different settings.
