Weather Alert Over: No Tornadoes in Lowcountry

The National Weather Service decided to lift the tornado watch for most counties in South Carolina, including those in the Lowcountry. This watch was initially set to last until 1 p. m. for Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Colleton, Beaufort, Orangeburg, Hampton, Jasper, and Allendale Counties. The weather experts announced that the severe weather threat had ended by just before 12:30 p. m. as the cold front lost some of its strength. The Live 5 Weather team also declared that Sunday's First Alert Weather Day was no longer in effect. The cold front that moved through Texas and Mississippi caused some serious damage. It triggered thunderstorms and tornadoes that sadly took the lives of two people and injured six others. In Liverpool, Texas, which is south of Houston, one person died, and four more were hurt but not critically. Around ten homes were damaged, but the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. In Houston, the National Weather Service planned to survey at least five locations affected by tornadoes on Sunday.

In Mississippi, the news wasn't any better. One person died in Adams County, and two were injured in Franklin County. The National Weather Service reported that two tornadoes hit Bude and the city of Brandon, ripping roofs off several buildings. It's believed that at least six tornadoes touched down in Houston, with more possibly found as damage surveys continue. Meteorologist Josh Lichter explained that damage in the area came from both tornadoes and straight-line winds. The Storm Prediction Center updated its storm threat for South Carolina on Sunday morning. The entire state, except for some coastal areas, was under the second-lowest threat level. But by Sunday, all 46 counties were raised to this level. A strong cold front from the west could bring storms later, coinciding with holiday travel. Early Sunday morning, overcast skies and low temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s were common. The cold front brought wind gusts and periods of heavy rain to parts of the Lowcountry by daybreak.
