Weather Forecasts Powered by AI, Then Funding Vanishes
Oklahoma, USAFriday, June 12, 2026
Over two decades, AI has evolved from a curiosity to a tool that government agencies and private companies use in everyday forecasts shown on smartphones.
In 2019, the researcher received a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation to launch an AI‑driven weather institute. The project hired 24 faculty, 35 researchers, 46 graduate students and 83 undergraduates—an effort too large for smaller grants.
However, her funding was later cut, illustrating how even high‑impact AI research can face abrupt financial setbacks.
