Weather Tech Pioneer Climavision Extends Partnership with NOAA

In a major step forward for weather forecasting, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has decided to continue working with weather tech company Climavision. This five-year extension will allow NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) to keep exploring how Climavision’s radar data can make predictions more accurate. Climavision, based in Louisville, Kentucky, has been building a nationwide network of weather radars. These radars collect data from low altitudes, filling gaps that current systems miss. The partnership started in 2022, and since then, Climavision’s radar data has been successfully integrated into NSSL’s Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system. This system is widely used for various weather-related tasks, like estimating rainfall and tracking severe weather. The extension of the partnership means NSSL scientists can now focus on even more ways to use this new data. They plan to incorporate it into the experimental Warn on Forecast System (WoFS) in the future.

Climavision’s network is growing fast, with 27 radars already in place across 14 states. This growth is crucial for understanding and predicting hazardous weather conditions more effectively. Chris Goode, Climavision’s CEO, is excited about the potential to enhance real-time severe weather detection and improve forecast models. NOAA sees the value in partnering with private companies like Climavision to advance their weather observation and modeling capabilities. It’s a win-win situation, as these partnerships help NOAA stay at the forefront of weather technology while also benefiting the public.
