A recent study looked into this by asking over 2, 600 people from three western U. S. states what they consider abortion. The study found that people aren't always on the same page. Only one scenario—having a procedure to end a pregnancy after deciding not to be pregnant—was consistently seen as abortion. Other situations were less clear. Some people thought things that aren't medical abortions were still abortions. Others didn't see medical abortions as abortions at all.

Beliefs about abortion legality, politics, personal experiences, and views on pregnancy all played a role in how people defined abortion. Those who think abortion should be illegal were more likely to see early pregnancy scenarios as abortion. On the other hand, those who support abortion rights tended to include more situations in their definition of abortion. This shows that people's understanding of abortion is complex. It's not just about medical facts. It's also about personal beliefs and experiences. The study highlights the need for more research into how people define abortion and how these definitions vary.
