What Do People Think About COVID-19 Care Rationing?

Imagine you're in a hospital during a big pandemic. There aren't enough beds for everyone who needs them. That's where triage protocols come in. They're rules to help decide who gets the best care. But they're not easy decisions. People worry if they'll be picked based on their age, health, or social value. To find out what people think is fair, researchers held online talks with members of the public from Ontario and Quebec on May 28th and June 4th, 2022. These talks, called Democratic Deliberations (DD), included adults not working in health care. They were picked randomly from the Leger Opinion poll website to get a mix of different backgrounds.

After analyzing the discussions, three big ideas came up. First, most people agreed on prioritizing patients with the best chance of surviving under tough conditions. They thought saving as many lives as possible was key. Second, people saw triage protocols as needed to make decisions fairer and easier for healthcare workers. Lastly, they thought certain conditions could make these rules more acceptable to the public.
