What Spanish Youth Expect in Romantic Relationships: A New Measure

You know how sometimes people say, "There's no map for relationships"? Well, maybe there should be! This project aimed to create a tool that measures what young adults in their late teens to thirties are looking for in their romantic relationships. The team of researchers designed the Expectations Toward Romantic Relationships scale (ETRR) because there weren't enough reliable tools out there for Spanish-speaking youth. They asked around 1, 000 students from different schools to fill out the ETRR, along with some other tests, like one about how they deal with close relationships and another about issues they saw in their parents' relationship. The point was to check how well the ETRR matched up with what these tests found.

To make sure the ETRR was on point, the students were split into two groups randomly. Using special math, the researchers found that the ETRR fits nicely into three categories: how steady they think relationships should be, how much they'd care for their partner, and how they handle disagreements. The scale had 19 questions in total. The findings showed that the ETRR was reliable and matched well with the other tests. It was linked to how comfortable or nervous people felt in close relationships and to some of the stuff they saw or learned from their parents about fighting. So, this new tool is a big deal! It’s a map for what Spanish-speaking young adults expect and want in their romantic relationships.
