Over the weekend, former President Donald Trump made a splash in the crypto world by promising to make the US a "bitcoin superpower" if he wins the November election. This news sent Bitcoin prices soaring on Monday morning, reaching their highest point since mid-June before settling back down later in the day.
Trump shared his plans at a bitcoin conference in Nashville. He wants to support the crypto industry by getting rid of the current SEC Chair and keeping all confiscated tokens as part of a national bitcoin stockpile. These comments are quite different from Trump's past views on crypto. During his time in office, he often criticized Bitcoin, even calling it a "scam against the dollar."
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate and big crypto supporter, pointed out these past criticisms during his own remarks. He also brought up Trump's failure to pardon Ross Ulbricht, who is serving life in prison for running the Silk Road marketplace where illegal drugs were bought using Bitcoin.
Trump announced he has raised $25 million from crypto donations over the last two months and has support from major crypto investors like Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, founders of Gemini. This news comes as Trump's party, the GOP, is showing more support for crypto in their 2024 platform.
