In a recent meeting, the environment ministers of G20 countries agreed to back new funding sources for protecting ecosystem services. This is exciting news, especially because Brazil has come up with an interesting plan called the Tropical Forests Forever Facility. Unlike some other programs that just reward one country, this one aims to help all tropical forest nations by paying them to preserve their forests. These forests are super important because they absorb a lot of carbon and help fight climate change. But unfortunately, many forests around the world are being cut down too quickly. That’s why it’s great that these ministers are focusing on this issue during their four-day meeting in Rio de Janeiro. The ministers talked about how to deal with problems like climate change and the loss of biodiversity, which is when different types of plants and animals disappear. They also discussed how to pay for all this work – whether that comes from governments or private companies. Brazil’s environment minister, Marina Silva, said it's crucial to act fast because many places are already facing big issues like floods and wildfires. In the end, they agreed on a few key points. One is that everyone needs to do more to fight climate change and adapt to its effects. They also reminded everyone that they support the Paris Agreement, which tries to keep global temperatures from rising too much. And they talked about some other big issues like oceans and plastic waste. Next month, the heads of state will look at what their ministers have come up with and make some decisions. Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is really focused on making sure that developing countries get fair treatment.
